Music Video

The music video we chose to recreate was Crush Culture by Conan Gray. We wanted to portray both romantic and anti-romantic theme at the same time. Our process consisted of lots of pre-production work including storyboarding, beat sheets, and brainstorming. Our brainstorming was pretty easy because one of our group members shared a wonderful idea that we all liked! We were SO inspired and so confident that our video would be AMAZING! We were disappointed. Production was very rough. We had planned on filming every Wednesday block we could up until the deadline... ha-ha-ha... Kansas kind of ruined this project for us. We lost 2 block days (3 hours) of filming time due to snow days, and one of our after-school sessions got canceled because our main character had to leave early due to the ice. We were all set up and everybody could do it except for our main character. It is very frustrating. It was beginning to seem like the "easy" video we picked wasn't easy at all- and there was no turning back. We all participated in a small piece of each role- we all had our director moments, editor moments, etc. As for our schedule, we planned to shoot every Wednesday block and one after school shoot the Friday before deadlines- we only got 2/4 Wednesday blocks to shoot. Our schedule was solid until the snow days (and our main actor's mom). My role in the process was "editor", and I learned that sometimes things don't go your way and that sometimes all there is to do is eat chocolate and make do with what you have. Editing went smoothly, given what we had. Our video's editing was very simple compared to some of the other groups. One group did "Pompeii" and they blacked out some of the people's eyes, which was pretty cool. All we had to do was seamlessly cut between over the shoulder shots and then medium frontal-view shots. We also had to change the saturation, which we never got around to.
What I would do differently is PICK AN ACTOR YOU KNOW YOU CAN RELY ON! Aly (Alejandro) would have been a great pick for our main actor. Our video was not only cut short because of the Kansas weather but also because Mario wasn't always available when we needed him. I would have kept the same video, though. I think that it very much has potential if done right!
Some experiences I could draw from this project is HAVE A PLAN B! We should have had a solid back up plan instead of working by day. Also, consider the weather before you film. The snow days were our biggest obstacle. My final thought is, I love you Mrs. Zimmerli, but I don't think I could do video next year if I had to.
